CYBERJAYA, Aug 22 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police have arrested several individuals for misusing communication and social media services.
MCMC Monitoring and Enforcement Division Chief Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said they were arrested in separate operations in Terengganu, Kelantan and Penang, recently.
He said the operations were carried out based on public information on several suspects who uploaded obscene contents in blog sites, sending out the contents via the short messaging service (SMS) and e-mail and making fake calls to the emergency line service centre 999.
He said several devices and gadgets which belonged to the suspects were also seized, besides their statements recorded to assist investigations.
“Among the seized devices are mobile phones, SIM cards, pen drives, laptops, modems and Samsung tablets,” he said in a statement here, Saturday.
Zulkarnain added the suspects will be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine not more than RM50,000 or jail not more than one year or both, upon conviction.
“We thank the individuals who have helped identify the suspects and we hope the public will continue providing us information regarding the misuse of these communication services,” he said.
In a related development, MCMC requested an individual, Muhamad Rais Ramlee, to contact MCMC investigating officer, Akmal Hamdy at 03-8688 8000 or come to MCMC headquarters for assisting investigations.- BERNAMA
