KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 – Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein today denied that he is quitting his cabinet post as reported by a news portal.

In response to Twitter follower @Nessie43’s question, “are you really leaving sir? what will they all do without you”, Hishammuddin stated:

“No, I am not. Negative spin by some irresponsible people.”

A report by news portal Free Malaysia Today which predicted that Hishammuddin might quit his cabinet post was carried by English daily, The New Straits Times, Wednesday.

Besides Hishammuddin, the report also predicted that Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal might also resign from the cabinet.

The NST reported that the issue arose due to the ultimatum given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over the IMalaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.

Reports said Hishammuddin was not present at the cabinet meeting last Friday when Najib had reportedly given an ultimatum to the cabinet ministers, telling them to resign if they did not support him over the 1MDB issue.

Hishammuddin in his tweet on Monday said he would support the ultimatum provided it fulfilled three conditions, which highlighted a need for accountability and transparency in solving the company’s RM42 billion debt.

The Defence Minister in a Twitter message on Monday, stated: “Agree, with conditions: 1) rationalisation of 1MDB, 2) accountability if there is wrongdoing, and 3) transparency on (conditions 1 and 2).”

Meanwhile, at a media conference this evening, Hishammuddin slammed the actions of certain parties in manipulating his statement and alleging he would be resigning from his Cabinet post over the 1MDB issue.

Reiterating his stand on not relinquishing his post, Hishammuddin said their attempts to create rifts within the Cabinet on the issue would not succeed.

“There is no issue of resigning. Some parties are trying to split us. I believe they will not succeed.

“The issue (1MDB) has been discussed in the Cabinet. So rumours on pitting us against each other just does not make sense. It is a negative spin so that we do not move as a team,” he said.
