SMC’s New Facility In Muar To Cater Educational Needs Of Indian Community

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 – An education-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Sri Murugan Centre (SMC), is holding a dinner to raise funds for the building of its administrative and education centre in Muar.

Johor SMC coordinator, P. Subramaniam said the fund-raising dinner would be held on Aug 30 at the Sin Kee Ting Banquet Hall, Jalan Sg. Abang, Muar.

He said upon completion of the building, to be known as ‘Kalvi Kovil’ (Temple of Education), it would function as the new administrative centre.

“It will also serve as a centre for the advancement of the Indian community, where academic classes, seminars and workshops for primary school to form six students will be held,” he told Bernama here today.

Subramaniam said the site for the project, covering 0.506 hectare, was acquired five years ago at a cost of RM1.2 million.

He said collection raised at the dinner would used to bear the cost of the building construction.

“We need at least another RM6 million to finish up the project. So we would like to ask our well wishers, especially thousands of our former students to come forward to lend a hand,” he added.

The ticket for the fund-raising dinner is RM500 per pax. Donations can be made by depositing into the CIMB Bank account number 8005986236 belonging to the Centre For Social and Cultural Advancement of Malaysian Indians or to contact Subramaniam at 012-6073284.

SMC was founded by Tan Sri Dr M. Thambirajah in 1982 together with 48 students of the Tamil Language Society and some lecturers of Universiti Malaya to prepare students sitting for the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) – BERNAMA
