KUNDASANG: Aftershocks struck just as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and several VIPs were visiting Kinabalu Park here, forcing them to evacuate from the building they were in.
The Deputy Prime Minister was getting an update on search and rescue operations for earthquake survivors at the Liwagu building there when the ground began to shake at about 1.35pm Sunday.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Ranau OCPD Deputy Supt Farhan Lee Abdullah immediately stopped their briefing as Muhyiddin’s bodyguards immediately ushered him out of the building.
Together with him were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Deputy Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and PAS president Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang.
The briefing continued at the rear of the double storey concrete building under the midday sun for about 30 minutes.
Later, Muhyiddin told the media that special assistance from the Federal and Sabah Governments would be given to the Malaysian victims of the earthquake.
He said families of the dead victims would each receive RM10,000 while those injured would be given RM2,000 each.
Muhyiddin said those stranded on the mountain and traumatised during the experience would receive RM1,000 each. – The Star Online
