Rewards for our heroes

PETALING JAYA: As you sow, so shall you reap and for those who have won against the odds at the Rio Olympics to emerge as winners, there are rewards waiting for them besides just the glory and prestige. Malaysian medallists at the recently concluded Olympics are set to receive over RM4mil in cash and other incentives for their haul of four silvers and one bronze.

Topping the list is the badminton men’s doubles of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, who will be receiving RM300,000 under the National Sports Council’s (NSC) incentive scheme and RM375,000 under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), all of which is to be shared equally between the pair.

They will each get a Proton Suprima S 1.6L Turbo Premium costing RM79,900, a unit of JL99’s LakePark Residence worth at least RM500,000 and an Osim uDiva Classic Massage Sofa at RM7,988. In total, they will get RM1.85mil each.

Third time Olympic silver medallist in the men’s singles, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, will pocket RM637,888, comprising RM300,000 from the NSC, RM250,000 from BAM, a Proton Suprima S 1.6L Turbo Premium and an Osim uDiva Classic Massage Sofa.

Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, who also won the silver medal, will receive the same cash rewards as the men’s double from NSC and BAM. This is in addition to the RM50,000 from the Malacca government, RM60,000 from mobile virtual network operator XOX Bhd and a Proton Suprima S 1.6L Turbo Premium and an Osim uDiva Classic Massage Sofa each.

Individually, Chan will also receive RM100,000 from the Penang government and RM50,000 from Hunza Group founder Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong. Goh will also receive RM25,000 from the Penang government, bringing the pair’s total reward to RM1.135mil. Divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong, who won silver in the women’s 10m platform synchronised event, are receiving RM475,776 in cash and other rewards.

For his bronze in the men’s keirin event, “Pocket Rocket Man” Azizulhasni Awang will get a total of RM265,506 – RM100,000 from NSC, RM100,000 from the Sime Darby Foundation, a Proton Iriz 1.6L premium worth RM62,030 and a RM988 Osim uCaress 3D Massage device, which comes with RM2,488-worth Osim uPhoria Warm leg massager.

All Olympian medallists will also receive a lifetime allowance from the Government from the time they clinch their medals.According to the NSC website, gold medallists will receive RM5,000 every month for the rest of their life while silver medallists will get RM3,000 monthly. Bronze medallists will be rewarded with RM2,000 monthly. -Thestar
