PM arrives in Jakarta for 20th IORA Summit

JAKARTA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrived here today to attend the 20th Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Summit.

Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, arrived at the Halim Perdanakesuma Airport at 2.35pm (3.35pm Malaysian time) and were greeted on arrival by, among others, Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Malaysia’s Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver his speech at the summit tomorrow and share Malaysia’s stand on issues as part of the agenda of the meeting.

The summit themed ‘Strengthening Maritime Cooperation for a Peaceful, Stable and Prosperous Indian Ocean’, was preceded by a meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials yesterday and a meeting of the Council of Ministers today.

Along with the official meetings, IORA will also engage the private sector through a “Business Summit” with the aim of deepening business cooperation in the region.

Leaders and representatives of the 21 IORA member states and seven dialogue partners are expected to attend the summit tomorrow and will discuss ways to strengthen maritime cooperation and fight against violent extremism.

IORA members comprise Malaysia, Australia, Bangladesh, Comoros, Indonesia, India, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

It also has seven dialogue partners – the United States of America, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and other special invitees and guests.
