COSTA DEL SOL, Spain – The Malaysian under-13 team kicked off their IberCup campaign with a 1-0 victory against Atletico Madrid under-13 at the La Campana Sports Complex here yesterday.
The sole goal in the game was scored by Danial Amali on 38 minutes.
The IberCup, widely known as one of the most important youth football tournaments on the planet, sees Malaysia placed in Group D along with Atletico Madrid of Spain and also SL Olivais and CF “Os Belenenses” G; both from Portugal.
Their second match will be tonight, against SL Olivais.
The under-13 Harimau Malaya squad is part of Malaysia’s National Football Development Programme and are coached by former Malaysia midfielder and Bayern Munich youth coach, Lim Teong Kim.
They have been on blistering form while on tour across Germany and Spain before the tournament, beating teams such as Bayern Munich under-13 (read here and here) and Spain Selection under-15 (readhere).
Now by beating another giant football club in the form of Atletico Madrid, they have received praise from one of the world’s leading grassroots football coach, Tom Byer.
Byer, took to Twitter to heap his admiration for our young lads, saying that they are our future.
